Creole Corn Bread

2 cups cornmeal
½ tsp salt
½ tsp soda
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp cayenne
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
½ cup shortening or cooking oil, salted
1 small to medium hot green pepper, seeded, de-veined and chopped fine

Mix cornmeal, baking powder and salt. Stir soda and pepper into buttermilk, add to the meal mix. Beat in the shortening, pour into a greased pan and bake for 30 minutes in a preheated 350º oven.
