Pennsylvania Dutch Applesauce Bread

2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp nutmeg
½ cup shortening
¾ cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup applesauce
½ cup chopped walnuts

Sift all dry ingredients together into bowl. Cream shortening in another bowl; add sugar ; cream well. Beat in eggs and vanilla; blend in dry ingredients alternately with applesauce. Stir in walnuts.

Pour into well-greased 9 x 5 x 3" baking pan; let rise for 20 minutes. Bake in preheated 350º oven for 55 to 60 minutes. Recipe may be doubled for 2 loaves.
